AI models are smart enough. The infrastructure has not caught up.

Every few months a new AI model launches and the conversation resets. Smarter, faster, more capable. The assumption is always the same: the model is the bottleneck, and a better model will unlock more value.

That assumption is wrong.

The models are already capable of extraordinary work. They can reason through complex financial analyses, draft legal documents, write production code, and synthesize information across dozens of sources. The bottleneck is not intelligence. The bottleneck is that the infrastructure around these models was not designed to let them actually do the work.

Abstraction layers are the problem

Most AI platforms give the model a set of predefined actions through abstraction layers. Each integration is hand-built. Each tool definition is a narrow wrapper that tells the AI "you can do this specific thing with this specific system in this specific way." The AI can only do what a developer anticipated and wrote a wrapper for.

This is how the industry ended up with AI tools that have 200 integrations and none of them work well. Each integration is a thin abstraction that exposes a fraction of what the underlying system can actually do. The AI sees the world through a keyhole, one narrow wrapper at a time, and every new capability requires another hand-built wrapper.

The model does not need to be smarter. It needs real access to real systems, with real tools, inside a real working environment. The difference between a chat window with 200 shallow integrations and an environment where AI has actual system access is the difference between a toy and infrastructure.

What real access looks like

Instead of giving the AI a predefined "get invoices" wrapper for QuickBooks, give it a real environment with the QuickBooks CLI installed, authenticated with the user's credentials, and let it use the tool the way it was designed to be used. The AI already knows how to use standard CLIs and packages from its training data. One real tool replaces hundreds of predefined wrappers.

Instead of building a narrow integration for every system, give the AI a governed container with the right packages installed, the right credentials injected, and the right network access configured. IT defines what is available per user and per role. The AI operates within those boundaries using real tools, not abstraction layers.

The result is more capability with more control. The AI can do anything the installed tools can do, which is vastly more than what hand-built wrappers allow. And the container itself is the security boundary, so IT controls exactly what is available without writing a single line of integration code.

The dual portal makes this possible

Most platforms only design for the human side, because that is what demos well. A pretty chat interface with a list of integrations. But the human side is the easy part. The hard part is giving AI a real environment that is powerful enough to do meaningful work and governed enough to deploy across an entire company.
